Assembling Garden Furniture and Outdoor Storage in South Wales: What You Need to Know
As the weather improves across South Wales every spring the number of garden furniture assembly requests I receive goes up significantly. Flatpack garden sets, storage boxes, raised beds, BBQ stations, garden bars and plastic or metal storage sheds all arrive in boxes that suggest a couple of hours of straightforward work and often deliver something considerably more demanding than that.
Garden and outdoor flat pack is genuinely different to indoor furniture assembly in several ways that make it trickier for most people to tackle without experience. Here is what those differences are and what I do to build garden furniture and outdoor storage properly so it lasts through South Wales weather.
Why Garden Flat Pack Is Trickier Than Indoor Assembly
The materials are less forgiving. Indoor flat pack relies heavily on cam locks, dowels and precision-cut chipboard components where everything fits together in a controlled way. Garden furniture and outdoor storage uses a wider variety of materials including powder-coated steel, aluminium frames, polyrattan weave, pressure-treated timber and thick walled plastic sections. Each of these materials behaves differently and responds differently if components are forced, overtightened or assembled in the wrong sequence.
The instructions are often poorer. Indoor furniture from major retailers tends to have reasonably well-developed instructions backed by years of refinement and customer feedback. Many garden furniture brands produce instructions that are significantly less clear, translated from other languages without correction and illustrated with diagrams that do not always match the actual components in the box.
The components are heavier. Garden furniture components are often much heavier than indoor flat pack pieces and may require two people to hold in position while fixings are tightened. Attempting to manage heavy steel or aluminium frame components alone while trying to follow unclear instructions leads to frustration and often to components being scratched, dented or assembled incorrectly.
The fixings are different. Outdoor furniture uses weather-resistant fixings including stainless steel bolts, nylon lock nuts and plastic washers that are not always the easiest to tighten correctly. Overtightening stainless into aluminium or plastic components is a common mistake that damages the receiving material.
South Wales weather is tough. Garden furniture across South Wales faces more rainfall and wind than in many other parts of the UK. Furniture that is assembled with loose fixings or incorrect alignment is more vulnerable to movement and damage in wet windy weather.

What I Assemble in South Wales Gardens
Rattan and polyrattan garden sets. Lounge sets, dining sets and corner sofas in polyrattan are popular across South Wales gardens but they arrive with many individual components that need to be connected in the right sequence. The frame connections need to be properly seated and fixed so the set sits correctly and does not rock or flex when in use.
Metal and aluminium frame furniture. Garden dining tables, chairs and parasol bases. The bolted connections in aluminium frame furniture need to be tightened correctly, firm enough to be stable but not so tight that they distort the frame or strip the threads.
Timber garden furniture. Solid timber and treated timber tables, benches and chairs. Timber furniture is heavy and often requires pre-drilling to prevent splitting when screws are driven. Pre-treating any cut surfaces with timber preservative before assembly extends the life of the furniture significantly in South Wales conditions.
Garden storage boxes and deck boxes. Plastic and metal storage boxes need their lid hinges and gas struts correctly positioned and adjusted for smooth operation. The base sections need to be on a flat stable surface or shimmed to prevent rocking that stresses the frame over time.
Plastic and metal garden sheds. These are the most demanding outdoor assembly jobs I carry out. They require a level base before construction can begin, careful component sequencing and accurate alignment of panel connections before fixings are tightened. A metal garden shed assembled on an unlevel base or with panels out of alignment will be immediately obvious and cannot be corrected easily once the structure is complete.
Raised garden beds. Timber raised beds need the corner joints properly connected and the structure sitting level. If raised beds are not level they look immediately wrong and water management within the bed is affected.
BBQ stations and outdoor kitchen units. These often combine flatpack structural components with fitting out including shelves, hooks and tool storage. The gas connections for BBQs are outside my scope and always need a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Swing seats and garden loungers. The frame connections on swing seats need to be properly tensioned so the swing operates smoothly without the frame flexing or creaking.
The Importance of a Level Base
For any garden structure that sits directly on the ground, whether that is a storage shed, a large storage box or a garden bar, the base surface matters enormously. I check the levelness of the proposed location before starting assembly and advise on whether any adjustment is needed. Assembling a structure on an uneven surface and then trying to correct the lean once it is built is far more difficult than addressing the base before anything goes together.
How to Get the Most From Your Garden Furniture in South Wales
Once assembled there are a few things worth doing to extend the life of garden furniture in the South Wales climate.
Cover or store furniture over winter. Even furniture described as weatherproof benefits from being covered or brought undercover during the worst winter weather. South Wales winters are wet and windy and prolonged exposure without any protection shortens the life of most outdoor furniture.
Treat timber furniture annually. Timber garden furniture needs a coat of appropriate exterior wood treatment each year to stay in good condition. This is best done at the start of the season before heavy use begins.
Check fixings annually. After a winter of South Wales weather it is worth checking that all the bolted connections in metal and timber garden furniture are still firm. Wind and temperature cycling can loosen fixings over time.

Frequently Asked Questions About Garden Furniture Assembly in South Wales
Do you assemble garden furniture in my garden or in a garage or outbuilding? Either. Where the furniture will be used in the garden that is usually the best place to assemble it since large garden sets are difficult to move once built.
Can you assemble a metal garden shed on concrete? Yes. A concrete base is actually ideal for a metal garden shed since it is level and stable. I check the level of the base before starting and advise on any adjustment needed.
Do you take the packaging away after assembly? I can break down and stack the packaging neatly. If you need full removal just let me know when you book.
Can you assemble furniture from any retailer? Yes. I assemble garden furniture and outdoor storage from all UK retailers including B&Q, Argos, Dunelm, Aldi, Lidl, Amazon and specialist garden furniture brands.
