Preparing Your South Wales Home for Winter: A Complete Checklist

Preparing Your South Wales Home for Winter: A Complete Checklist

South Wales winters bring heavy rain, strong winds and cold temperatures that test every part of a property. Here is my complete checklist to get your home ready before winter arrives.

Preparing Your South Wales Home for Winter: A Complete Checklist

South Wales winters are no joke. Heavy rainfall, strong winds funnelling down the valleys and temperatures that swing between mild and freezing all put real pressure on a property. The homes that come through winter unscathed are almost always the ones where a bit of preparation was done in advance. The ones that end up with damp patches, draughts, blocked gutters and fence damage are usually the ones where small issues were left to develop over the autumn months.

I put this checklist together to help South Wales homeowners get ahead of winter before the worst weather arrives. Some jobs you can do yourself. Others are worth booking a professional for to make sure they are done properly.

Outside the Property

Clear and check your gutters. Falling leaves combined with South Wales rainfall make blocked gutters one of the most common autumn problems. A blocked gutter overflows, sends water down your exterior walls and increases the risk of damp inside the property. Check the whole gutter run for blockages, cracked joints and any sections that have started to sag away from the fascia. I clear and repair gutters across South Wales as a quick and affordable job that prevents much more expensive damp problems later.

Inspect your roof from the ground. Look for any obviously missing, slipped or cracked tiles. Check the pointing around chimney stacks. Catching a small roof issue before winter storms arrive avoids a much bigger repair when water finds its way in during heavy rain.

Check exterior woodwork for paint failure. Peeling or flaking paint on window frames, door frames, soffits and fascias is the first sign that moisture is getting into the timber beneath. Repainting now, before winter sets in, is significantly cheaper than dealing with rotten timber in spring.

Inspect and treat your fences. South Wales winters bring strong winds that test every fence panel and post. Check for leaning posts, rotten timber at ground level and panels that have started to split. Reinforcing or repairing a fence before winter storms arrive is far easier and cheaper than dealing with a fence that has blown down completely.

Check external taps and outdoor pipework. If you have an outside tap consider fitting an insulated tap cover before the first frost to prevent the pipe freezing and potentially bursting. If you will not be using the outside tap over winter turning off the supply at the isolation valve is a sensible precaution.

Bring in or protect garden furniture and loose items. Anything left loose in a garden becomes a hazard in strong winds. Securing or storing garden furniture, plant pots and any other loose items reduces the risk of damage to your property or your neighbours.

Check paths and steps for trip hazards. Frost and ice make any uneven or cracked paving significantly more dangerous. Addressing trip hazards now is much easier than trying to repair them once winter weather sets in.

Doors and Windows

Check for draughts around external doors. Run your hand around the edge of external doors on a windy day to feel for draughts. Worn weatherstripping or a door that has shifted slightly on its frame both let cold air in and warm air out, driving up your heating bills throughout winter. I fit new weatherstripping and adjust doors so they seal properly.

Test that all doors close and latch properly. A door that does not close fully is a significant source of heat loss. If any of your doors have started sticking, dropping or failing to latch cleanly now is the time to get them sorted before the cold weather arrives.

Check window seals and locks. Worn window seals let in draughts in exactly the same way as doors. Check that all window locks engage properly, both for security and to ensure windows are sealing correctly when closed.

Bleed your radiators. Before you rely on your heating system for the winter check every radiator for cold spots at the top which indicate trapped air. Bleeding radiators improves heating efficiency significantly and is a simple job that takes only a few minutes per radiator.

Inside the Property

Check your loft insulation. Heat rises and a significant proportion of home heat loss happens through the roof. If your loft insulation looks thin, has shifted or is showing gaps it is worth topping up before winter. I am happy to advise on this when I am at your property for other work.

Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Winter means more time indoors with heating systems running constantly. Test all alarms and replace batteries as a priority before the season starts.

Check sealant around baths, showers and basins. Cracked or missing sealant lets moisture into walls and floors and the consequences are worse in winter when ventilation is often reduced due to closed windows. Re-sealing wet areas now prevents a much bigger problem developing over the colder months.

Inspect under sinks for slow leaks. A slow drip that goes unnoticed in autumn can cause significant hidden damage by the time it is discovered in spring. A quick check under kitchen and bathroom sinks catches this early.

For Landlords

If you manage rental properties across South Wales autumn is the ideal time to carry out a full winter-readiness inspection. Tenants reporting cold draughts, damp patches or heating issues during winter is far more disruptive and costly to deal with than addressing the underlying causes proactively in autumn.

I work regularly with landlords and letting agents across South Wales carrying out pre-winter inspections and maintenance visits. I can provide written records of all work completed for your property files and flag any issues that need addressing before the colder months set in.
