TV Wall Mounting in South Wales: What to Know Before You Book

Mounting a TV on the wall transforms a room. It frees up space, looks far more deliberate than a TV perched on a unit and with the cables tidied away properly it gives a clean, modern finish. The trouble is that a TV mount looks deceptively simple to fit and the consequences of getting it wrong range from a wonky TV to a genuinely dangerous situation if a modern flat screen comes away from the wall.

I fit TV wall mounts across South Wales on all wall types and TV sizes. This guide covers what is actually involved and what I always check before drilling a single hole.

Why TV Mounting Needs to Be Taken Seriously

Modern flat screen TVs are lighter than older models but they are not light enough to be safely supported by an inadequate fixing. A 55 inch TV typically weighs somewhere between 15kg and 25kg depending on the model, and that weight is concentrated on a relatively small bracket footprint on the back of the TV. If the wall fixing is not adequate for that load the result is, at best, a TV that has come away from the wall and is damaged. At worst it is a serious safety hazard, particularly in homes with children.

This is why understanding the wall type and matching the fixing to both the wall and the weight of the TV is the most important part of any mounting job.

Understanding Your Wall Before Mounting a TV

Solid masonry walls. Common in older South Wales properties. Once a TV bracket is properly fixed into solid brick or stone with the correct masonry plugs it will hold significant weight reliably.

Cavity walls. The fixing needs to reach the inner skin of brick or block behind the outer wall for maximum strength rather than relying on the cavity itself.

Plasterboard on timber studs. The strongest approach is fixing directly into the timber studs behind the plasterboard. TV brackets typically have multiple fixing points spaced to align with standard stud spacing but this needs to be checked and sometimes the bracket position needs adjusting slightly to hit the studs correctly.

Dot and dab plasterboard over masonry. Common in many newer South Wales builds. This requires fixings that pass through the plasterboard and the adhesive dabs to reach the solid masonry behind, since the plasterboard alone and the gaps behind it are not strong enough to support a TV safely.

I always identify the wall type before mounting any TV and select fixings appropriately. This is not a step that can be skipped or guessed at.

What a Proper TV Mounting Job Involves

Assessing the wall and the TV. I check the wall construction and confirm the weight rating needed based on the TV size and bracket type.

Choosing the right bracket. Fixed, tilting and full-motion brackets all have different requirements and the right choice depends on the room layout, viewing angles and where seating is positioned relative to the wall.

Locating studs or solid fixing points. Using a stud finder or careful assessment to identify exactly where to drill for maximum strength.

Marking and levelling. Using a spirit level to ensure the bracket is perfectly level before drilling, since even a slight tilt is immediately obvious once the TV is mounted and switched on.

Drilling and fixing the bracket. Using the correct drill bit and fixing for the wall type and torquing fixings appropriately, not overtightening into plasterboard or undertightening into masonry.

Hanging and securing the TV. Lifting the TV onto the bracket and confirming it is securely locked in place before letting go.

Cable management. Running cables neatly, either through a cable cover, behind the wall through conduit where appropriate, or using cable clips for a tidy finish along the wall or down to a unit below.

Final check. Confirming the TV is level, secure and that all connections are working correctly before finishing.

Cable Management Options

How cables are dealt with makes a significant difference to the finished look.

Surface mounted cable covers. A painted channel that runs from the TV down to a socket or unit, hiding the cables while remaining a visible feature on the wall. This is the simplest option and does not require any work inside the wall itself.

In-wall cable management kits. These involve cutting two holes in the plasterboard, one behind the TV and one near the skirting board, and running a tube through the cavity to pass cables between them invisibly. This gives the cleanest possible finish but is only suitable for stud walls with an accessible cavity, not solid masonry walls.

Trunking along skirting boards. For situations where running cables behind the wall is not possible, careful routing along skirting boards using small trunking gives a tidy result that is far less visible than cables left hanging loose.

I can advise on the best option for your specific wall and room layout when you get in touch.

Common TV Mounting Mistakes I Get Called Out to Fix

TV mounted into plasterboard alone with no stud or solid fixing. This is the most common and most dangerous mistake. It may hold initially but failure is often a matter of time rather than if.

Bracket mounted off level. A TV that is even slightly tilted is very noticeable and irritating to live with.

TV mounted too high. A common mistake when mounting above a fireplace without considering the actual seated viewing angle, resulting in neck strain when watching.

Cables left hanging loose. This undermines the clean look that motivated the wall mounting in the first place.

I am regularly called out to correct mounting jobs that have gone wrong, usually because the wrong fixing was used for the wall type.

Frequently Asked Questions About TV Wall Mounting in South Wales

Can you mount a TV above a fireplace? Yes, though I would discuss viewing height and angle with you first since this position often results in a less comfortable viewing angle than mounting at standard eye level. Heat from the fireplace is also worth considering depending on the type of fire.

Do you supply the TV bracket or do I need to buy my own? I can supply a bracket suited to your TV size and wall type, or fit one you have already purchased. Just let me know when you book.

Can you remove a TV I have already mounted myself if it is not level or secure? Yes. I regularly correct TV mounting jobs that have not been done with the right fixings or have ended up off level.

Will mounting my TV damage my wall if I want to remove it later? Removing a TV bracket leaves small holes that can be filled and made good easily. This is a normal and minor consideration when weighed against the benefits of wall mounting.

Can you mount a soundbar or other equipment alongside the TV? Yes. I can mount soundbars and other equipment as part of the same visit and tidy cable management for the full setup.
