How Much Does Painting and Decorating Cost in South Wales? (2026 Guide)
If you are thinking about getting a room painted or some decorating done and you want to know what it is likely to cost before you pick up the phone then this guide is for you. Painting and decorating prices vary quite a bit depending on who you hire, what is included in the quote and how honestly the job is described upfront.
I carry out painting and decorating work across South Wales at a straightforward rate of £75 per hour with no VAT and no callout fee. This guide gives you a clear picture of how long common painting jobs take and what that means in real terms for your budget.
How Painting and Decorating Is Priced in South Wales
There are two common ways painting and decorating work is priced. Some decorators charge a fixed price per room. Others like me charge an hourly rate. Both approaches have their place but an hourly rate is generally more transparent because you pay for the actual time spent rather than a fixed price that may have a significant margin built in or that cuts corners on preparation to protect the decorator's profit.
My rate is £75 per hour with no VAT. Paint and materials are charged separately at cost. I will always tell you what materials are needed and the approximate cost before I start any work.

Typical Painting and Decorating Costs in South Wales
The times and costs below are based on my actual experience of carrying out these jobs across South Wales in 2026. They assume surfaces are in reasonable condition. Walls with significant damage, multiple layers of old wallpaper or heavily textured surfaces will take longer to prepare and the time estimate will reflect that.
Feature Wall
A single feature wall in a living room, bedroom or dining room is one of the most popular painting requests I receive. It involves preparation, cutting in neatly around all edges and applying two coats of emulsion.
- Typical time: 2.5 to 4 hours
- Typical cost: £187 to £300
Full Room Repaint (Walls and Ceiling)
A full room repaint covering ceiling and all four walls. This includes preparation, filling any holes or cracks, sanding back, cutting in and two coats of emulsion throughout.
- Small room such as a bedroom or bathroom: 4 to 6 hours (£300 to £450)
- Medium room such as a living room or dining room: 5 to 7 hours (£375 to £525)
- Large open plan room: 7 to 10 hours (£525 to £750)
Full Room Repaint Including Woodwork
Adding the woodwork to a full room repaint means painting skirting boards, door frames, window frames and the door itself. Woodwork needs to be sanded, cleaned and painted carefully with gloss or satinwood for a smooth professional finish.
- Small room with woodwork included: 5 to 8 hours (£375 to £600)
- Medium room with woodwork included: 7 to 10 hours (£525 to £750)
Woodwork Only
If the walls are fine but the woodwork needs refreshing I can paint just the skirting boards, door frames and doors in a room without touching the walls.
- Woodwork only in a small room: 2 to 3 hours (£150 to £225)
- Woodwork only in a medium room: 3 to 4 hours (£225 to £300)
Staircase and Landing
Staircases and landings are time-consuming because of the awkward access, the number of individual spindles and the care needed to cut in neatly on angled surfaces.
- Staircase and landing including walls, ceiling and woodwork: 5 to 8 hours (£375 to £600)
Exterior Woodwork
Exterior timber including window frames, door frames, soffits and fascias needs proper preparation and exterior grade paint or stain to withstand South Wales weather.
- Front door and frame: 2 to 3 hours (£150 to £225)
- Window frames on one elevation: 3 to 5 hours (£225 to £375)
- Full exterior woodwork on a standard semi-detached: 6 to 10 hours (£450 to £750)
Hallway
Hallways are often the most visible space in a home and one of the most complex to paint because of the number of surfaces, the door and the staircase in many South Wales properties.
- Hallway walls and ceiling only: 3 to 5 hours (£225 to £375)
- Full hallway including woodwork and staircase wall: 5 to 8 hours (£375 to £600)
What Is Included in My Painting Price?
Every painting job I carry out includes:
- Moving and covering furniture and floor areas with dust sheets
- Filling small holes, cracks and imperfections with appropriate filler
- Sanding back filled areas and any areas where the existing paint is flaking
- Applying primer to bare plaster, new filler or bare wood where needed
- Cutting in carefully around all edges, corners and fixtures
- Two full coats of finish paint throughout
- Removing dust sheets and leaving the room clean and tidy
What is not included in the hourly rate is the cost of paint and materials which are charged at cost. If you supply your own paint I just charge for the labour time.
How to Get the Most From a Painting Visit
A few things you can do before I arrive to make the visit run as efficiently as possible:
Move small items of furniture, ornaments and pictures out of the room or stack them in the centre and I will cover them with dust sheets. The less time spent moving and covering furniture the more time I can spend actually painting.
If you have already chosen your paint have it on site before I arrive. If you need advice on paint type or finish I am happy to talk it through when you get in touch and before the visit.
Let me know in advance if there are any areas of significant damage or old wallpaper that needs removing. This affects the time estimate and it is better to have an accurate picture before we start.
Does the Cost of Paint Vary Much?
Yes and the difference matters. A cheap own-brand emulsion and a quality trade emulsion can look the same going on but they perform very differently over time. Trade quality paint covers better in fewer coats, dries to a more durable finish and holds its colour for longer.
I use trade quality paint on all jobs where I am supplying materials and I am happy to advise you on the best options if you are buying your own. Spending a little more on paint is nearly always worth it in terms of how long the finish lasts.
Frequently Asked Questions About Painting Costs in South Wales
Do you charge more for dark or bold colours? Not more per hour. However painting from a light colour to a very dark one or from a dark colour to a light one often requires an additional coat to achieve proper coverage which adds time and therefore cost. I will flag this before starting if it applies to your job.
How long does paint need to dry between coats? Most modern emulsions are touch dry within an hour and ready for a second coat within two to four hours. Gloss and satinwood for woodwork takes longer. I always allow the appropriate drying time between coats regardless of how this affects the overall job duration.
Can you paint over wallpaper? In some cases yes. However if the wallpaper is lifting, bubbling or in poor condition painting over it tends to make things look worse rather than better. I will give you an honest assessment of whether stripping is advisable when I see the room.
Do you remove wallpaper? Yes. Wallpaper stripping is charged at the same hourly rate and is always done before any painting begins. The time needed depends on how many layers there are and how well they were hung originally.
Can you match existing paint colours? I can work from a paint code, a tin label or a brand and colour name. If you are unsure what paint was used previously most large DIY retailers offer a paint matching service where they can mix a close match from a small sample.
Do you paint in all areas of South Wales? Yes. I carry out painting and decorating work across South Wales including the Valleys, Newport, Cardiff, Caerphilly, Cwmbran, Pontypool, Abergavenny and all surrounding areas.
