Not sure what a handyman can and cannot help with? This honest guide covers everything I do across South Wales so you can decide whether I am the right person for your job.

What Does a Handyman Actually Do? Your Questions Answered

It is one of the most common questions I get asked and it is a fair one. The word handyman gets used loosely and people are often unsure whether the job they need doing is something I cover or whether they need to find a specialist tradesperson instead.

The short answer is that a good handyman covers a wide range of general repair, maintenance and improvement work around the home. The longer answer is what this article is about. I have put together answers to the questions I get asked most often so you can work out quickly whether I am the right person for your job.

What Kind of Jobs Does a Handyman Do?

A handyman carries out general repair and maintenance work that does not require a specialist qualification. The range is wider than most people expect. Here is a broad overview of what I cover across South Wales:

Carpentry work including fitting doors, hanging shelves, installing skirting boards and dado rails, building fitted storage, laying laminate flooring and repairing damaged timber.

Flat pack furniture assembly including all IKEA, Argos, Wayfair, B&Q and Dunelm furniture. Beds, wardrobes, sofas, desks, dining sets, garden furniture and everything in between.

Painting and decorating including interior room repaints, feature walls, ceiling painting, woodwork painting and exterior timber painting and staining.

General home repairs including fixing sticking doors, tightening loose banisters, replacing broken fixtures and fittings, repairing draughty windows and doors and dealing with minor wear and tear throughout the home.

Basic plumbing including fitting new taps, replacing toilet seats and cistern internals, fixing dripping taps, replacing bath and basin wastes and fitting outside taps.

Home security including fitting new locks on all door types, replacing window latches, fitting door chains and security bolts and making properties secure after a break-in.

Picture and mirror hanging including single items, gallery walls and large or heavy mirrors requiring specialist fixings.

Fence and gate repairs including replacing damaged panels and posts, resetting leaning posts, rehanging dropped gates and replacing worn gate hardware.

Property maintenance including seasonal maintenance visits, between-tenancy work for landlords and working through lists of outstanding repairs in a single visit.

Emergency repairs with 24 hour availability for situations where something has gone wrong and cannot wait.

What Does a Handyman Not Do?

Being honest about what I do not cover is just as important as being clear about what I do. There are certain types of work that require specialist qualifications and I would never attempt these.

Gas work. Anything involving gas appliances, boilers, gas pipes or gas fittings must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. I do not carry out any gas work and would always direct you to the right professional.

Electrical work beyond basic tasks. Changing a plug, replacing a light fitting or fitting a new socket are tasks a competent handyman can handle in many situations. However any work involving the consumer unit, fixed wiring, ring mains or anything that requires a Part P notification must be carried out by a qualified electrician.

Full bathroom or kitchen installations. A full bathroom or kitchen fit involves coordinating plumbing, tiling, electrics and carpentry across a complex project. This is generally beyond the scope of a handyman and is better suited to a specialist bathroom or kitchen fitter.

Structural work. Removing walls, cutting through joists or any alteration that affects the structural integrity of a building requires professional structural assessment.

Roofing. Any work on the roof itself beyond clearing gutters and downpipes should be carried out by a qualified roofer with appropriate access equipment and insurance.

If I visit for a job and discover it requires a specialist I will always tell you honestly rather than attempting something outside my competence.

Is a Handyman the Same as a Builder?

No. A builder typically works on larger construction projects such as extensions, conversions, new builds or significant structural alterations. A handyman focuses on smaller repairs, maintenance and improvement tasks within an existing property. For most of the day-to-day jobs that need doing in a home a handyman is the right and more cost-effective choice.

Do I Need a Handyman or a Specialist Tradesperson?

For many common home repairs a handyman is the better choice. A specialist plumber, electrician or carpenter often charges a significantly higher rate for smaller jobs because their expertise is priced for more complex work. If your dripping tap is a straightforward washer replacement or you need a shelf fitted there is no need to pay specialist rates for work a competent handyman handles every day.

I will always be honest if a job genuinely needs a specialist. I would rather tell you that upfront and point you in the right direction than take on something beyond my scope.

How Do I Know if a Handyman Is Trustworthy?

This is an important question and one that every homeowner should ask. Here is what I think you should look for:

DBS check. Anyone working in your home should be DBS checked. I am fully DBS checked and happy to provide evidence of this.

Public liability insurance. If something goes wrong during a job you need to know the tradesperson is insured. I carry full public liability insurance on every job.

Transparent pricing. A trustworthy handyman gives you a clear rate and an honest time estimate before starting work. I charge £75 per hour with no VAT and no callout fee and always give you an estimate upfront.

Reviews. Check Google reviews and ask for references if you want reassurance. I have 5-star Google reviews from homeowners across South Wales.

Honest about scope. A good handyman tells you when a job is outside their capability rather than attempting it anyway. I will always be upfront about this.

How Much Does a Handyman Cost in South Wales?

My rate is £75 per hour with no VAT and no callout fee. Most small jobs take one to two hours. A half day visit works out to around £225 to £300 and covers a solid list of different repairs. Materials are charged at cost and I always give you a clear breakdown before starting.
