The Ultimate Guide to Hiring a Handyman in South Wales
Whether you have never hired a handyman before or you have had a bad experience in the past and want to approach it more carefully this time this guide gives you everything you need to find the right person, book them confidently and get the best possible result from the visit.
I am The Valleys Handyman, based in Blaenau Gwent and covering the whole of South Wales. Everything in this guide reflects how I work and what I believe every homeowner across the region deserves from a local handyman.
Step One: Know What You Need Done
Before you pick up the phone it helps to have a clear idea of what jobs need doing. You do not need to know technical details or have any idea how the job is carried out. What helps is being able to describe the problem in plain terms.
Be specific about the symptom. "The back door sticks badly when it is wet" is more useful than "the door needs fixing." "The kitchen tap has been dripping for about three months" is more useful than "something wrong with the tap."
Think about whether you have a list. A single small job is perfectly fine to book me for. But if you have been ignoring a collection of small jobs around the house booking a half day to work through all of them is far more cost-effective than booking multiple separate visits. Think about whether anything else in the house needs attention before you call.
Know your wall types if you can. For jobs involving fixing things to walls, shelving, mirrors, curtain poles and the like, a rough idea of whether your walls are solid (sound dense when knocked) or hollow (sound hollow when tapped) helps me come with the right tools and fixings.

Step Two: Check the Right Things Before Booking
Not all handymen are equal. Here is what to verify before committing to a booking.
DBS check. Anyone who will be working in your home, particularly if you will be alone during the visit, should be DBS checked. This is a criminal record check that gives you confidence the person has been vetted. I am fully DBS checked and happy to provide evidence.
Public liability insurance. If something goes wrong during the job, a tool damages a floor or a wall fix causes unexpected damage, you need to know the tradesperson is insured. Ask directly whether they carry public liability insurance and what the cover level is. I carry full public liability insurance on every job.
Transparent pricing. Ask for the hourly rate, whether VAT is added on top and whether there is a callout fee. A tradesperson who cannot or will not give you a clear rate upfront is one to approach with caution. My rate is £75 per hour with no VAT and no callout fee.
Reviews. Check Google reviews specifically since these come from verified customers and are harder to manipulate than testimonials on a trader's own website. Look for a pattern of consistent positive feedback across different types of jobs and over a sustained period rather than a small cluster of very recent reviews.
Honesty about scope. A trustworthy handyman tells you when a job is outside their capability. If a handyman is willing to take on absolutely anything regardless of what it is, including gas work or structural alterations, approach with caution. I will always be honest about what I do and do not cover.
Step Three: Getting a Quote
For most standard handyman jobs a quote comes in the form of an honest time estimate rather than a fixed price. This is because the actual time a job takes often depends on factors that only become clear once the work starts: how accessible a fixing is, whether previous work needs to be undone before the current repair can be carried out and the condition of the existing surfaces and fittings.
Describe the job clearly when you call. The more clearly you can describe the problem the more accurate my time estimate will be.
Ask what could affect the estimate. For any job where the time estimate could be affected by factors that will only become clear on arrival I will tell you that upfront so you are not surprised.
Ask about materials. Some jobs require materials such as replacement washers, new screws or filler. I always tell you what materials are likely to be needed and their approximate cost before starting.
Step Four: Preparing for the Visit
A few simple things make a visit go more smoothly and allow me to spend more of my time on the actual work rather than on setup.
Clear the area where I will be working. For painting jobs move furniture away from walls and cover anything that is staying in the room. For shelving or mirror hanging clear the wall area and move any furniture that might obstruct access. For plumbing jobs clear out the cupboard under the sink.
Have any materials you have purchased on site. If you have already bought a shelf, a tap, a lock or any other item for me to fit make sure it is in the house before I arrive. If the item arrives after I do the time I spend waiting is time you are paying for.
Make a list. If you have several jobs write them down in order of priority. This means that if we run out of time the most important things are done first.
Tell me about any complications you know of. If you know a previous repair was done badly, if there is an old stud wall where a solid wall might be expected or if the plumbing under a sink has had previous work done that you are not sure about, tell me. Better to know before I start than to encounter a surprise mid-job.

Step Five: During the Visit
Feel free to ask questions. A good handyman explains what they are doing and why if you ask. I am happy to talk through the work as I go.
Tell me if something is not right. If something looks wrong or different to what you expected say so at the time rather than after I have left. It is much easier to address something in the moment.
Check the work before I leave. At the end of the visit take a proper look at everything that has been done and tell me if anything needs adjustment. Doors should be tested. Shelves should be pushed to check they are secure. Painted surfaces should be checked under different lighting.
Step Six: After the Visit
Allow painted surfaces to cure properly before touching them. Fresh emulsion is touch-dry quickly but not fully hardened. Avoid touching painted walls for 24 hours where possible.
Test fixed items under load gradually. A new shelf fitted correctly will hold its specified load but there is no harm in adding weight gradually over the first few days rather than immediately filling it to capacity.
Get in touch if anything is not right. I back all my work with a money-back guarantee. If something is not as it should be contact me and I will come back and put it right.
Common Questions About Hiring a Handyman in South Wales
How far in advance should I book? For most standard jobs I can usually book you in within one to two days. For larger jobs or during particularly busy periods such as spring a few days notice is helpful. For urgent issues I aim to attend the same day wherever possible.
What if the job takes longer than estimated? I let you know as soon as it becomes clear a job is taking longer than expected and give you an updated estimate before continuing. You are never committed to a cost you have not agreed to.
Can I book for a fixed amount of time rather than an open ended visit? Yes. Booking me for a set amount of time, a morning, an afternoon or a full day, and having me work through a list in that time is a perfectly sensible approach.
What areas do you cover in South Wales? I cover the whole of South Wales from Swansea in the west to Chepstow in the east and from Cardiff and Newport in the south to the Valleys communities of Blaenau Gwent and Merthyr Tydfil in the north.
What if I need a job that requires a specialist rather than a handyman? I will always tell you honestly if a job needs a specialist rather than a handyman and in many cases I can suggest who to contact.
